Blake took a deep breath and wrapped her hand around the door handle. It was her freshman year of high school in a brand new town and she wasn’t quite sure what to expect. She pulled the door gently and stepped inside the small classroom, avoiding eye contact with her other peers. She took an empty seat next to an unfamiliar boy. It wasn’t until she heard “Hi, I’m Logan Thomson,” escape his lips when she looked over at him. “I’m Blake, Blake Emerson,” she responded with a sweet smile. From that day on they’ve been best friends. He was always the one she’d go to if she had a problem or even if she just needed to talk and the same went for him. She never considered him to be someone she’d date or have serious feelings for, but that soon changed. From the day Logan introduced his new girlfriend to Blake, she knew their relationship would not last for a long time. For one, Logan and Jill were complete opposites, and although there is a saying “opposites attract”, their relationship pushed that to a whole new level.  Blake kept all her thoughts about how their relationship seemed artificial and how she wasn’t the right girl for him to herself though; she knew that if he really did care about this woman, her opinions about her weren’t worth risking her friendship with Logan. Whatever made Logan happy, made Blake happy too by default. Still, a spark went off inside Blake. She no longer wanted to be just his best friend; she wanted to be the one marrying him. Blake wanted to be the last person to see him at night and the first to see him in the morning. Through all the years of their friendship, Blake fell for him. The uneasiness in her stomach that arose whenever she saw him with other girls wasn’t because she was afraid they would ruin the friendship Blake had built up with Logan, but more so because she wanted to be that girl, the only one he had eyes for, the one he called beautiful. Yet, that would never happen. Blake was just another one of the guys and that’s all she’d ever be in his eyes.

She sat up in her bed for a moment and just reflected on everything that has occurred in the past few years. So many things happened, and she never really sat down to think about how much her life had changed. The man she loved became engaged, got married, and started to live a seemingly happy life. On the outside, Blake tried to act as if she was happy for him, but deep down rage, jealously, and sorrow filled her. But as the months went on, it was wearing her down. Her friendship with Logan was starting to diminish, mostly because Jill didn’t like the fact Logan was best friends with a girl. She can remember the night Logan came over to tell her he was getting a divorce like it was yesterday.

Blake sat on her couch, with a bag of original lays chips beside her and a half empty bottle of beer on the coffee table alongside the couch. She was watching the Steelers vs. Cowboys game in pajama shorts and a tank top, a normal Monday night activity for her. She reached in the bag for a few more chips when the doorbell rang. She quickly turned her head, she wasn’t expecting anyone and it was a bit late for someone to stop by to visit. She cautiously got up and made her way to the door. As she stood on her toes, she peeked through the peephole to see a disheveled Logan. She immediately slid her fingers over the locks to unlock them and pulled the door open. “Logan I—,” she started before he began to sob. It broke her heart to see her best friend like this. After countless questions and no answers, Logan spoke two simple words, “She left.” As much as she wanted to be upset for him, she honestly couldn’t. It was finally her chance to make a move on the man she’s wanted for so long, her best friend.
